Essential system maintenance on 26 and 27 April 2014
As part of the ongoing Data Centre maintenance programme, ITS will be carrying out essential system maintenance in the University Data Centres on the weekend of the 26 and 27 April 2014.
This outage has been agreed by the Operations Board and will entail major work on our storage and network infrastructure.
During this period all systems including email, network access and telephony should be considered at risk of outage or disruption, although ITS will endeavour to minimise any disruption during this period.
ITS apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
Windows 7 deployment to All University PCs
This is a reminder that all users MUST migrate to a Windows 7 Operating System. If you fail to move to Windows 7 by the 31st MARCH 2014 you will not be able to log onto the University Network. This is to ensure that your XP O/S does not pose a security risk to the University once Microsoft withdraw support which will happen on this date.
All the core applications that were previously listed as unsupported are now supported on Windows 7.
To receive an upgrade to Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010 please email ITS-ServiceDesk@salford.ac.uk and arrange a convenient time to complete this process which can run overnight.
Please note that the standard installation is the 32-bit version of Windows 7. The 64-bit version will only be deployed where it is essential for software compatibility reasons.
Your Existing Desktop Applications
If you have any additional software installed with your current Windows XP image, you need to ensure that it is compatible with Windows 7 and that you have the appropriate software available with valid licences approved by ITS. This will allow an ITS Technician to reinstall this after the upgrade process has taken place. A current list of the software provided as standard on the University image can be found at http://www.its.salford.ac.uk/software/windows7/ .
Training and support
Training is available online or can be arranged by contacting HR-HRDEnquiries@salford.ac.uk. Support is also available at Drop-In Surgeries which are run by HRD three times a week in the Newton and the Allerton buildings.
